It's sad because now with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fire Stations are no longer opened for their usual Open House. Only the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery is opened to the public. However they only admit very little visitors per slot so do remember to book in advance before you visit! We booked 1 month in advance for a Friday evening slot on the eve of the school holidays.
The boy, who loves fire-engines, was the most excited among us!
The gallery was not very big but it housed many historical fire engines that helps us to appreciate the evolution of the modern day fire engine. The old school fire engines had a lot of character but were probably not as efficient in putting out fires.
There was a fire engine on display that allowed visitors to climb into it to watch an old film. It was quite fun!
The kids also learnt about the infamous Bukit Ho Swee fire before heading up to the 2nd floor.
The second floor was dedicated to the history of the SCDF and the state of readiness. It's quite small, dark and kinda of creepy because of the many life-size mannequins wearing different uniforms to represent the various rescue/life saving officers.
We particularly liked the search and rescue scene that depicted the use of dogs and heat sensors to look for survivors in the debris.
There were a lot of interactive boards and games but most of them were closed sadly due to COVID-19. As a result, we finished touring the gallery earlier than expected.
If you like model cars, you can check out their collection of model cars at the counter before you go! The boy and I love model cars so this was fun for us 😄
I think this gallery is worth a visit only if you love fire engines since the fire stations are closed to the public for now. Otherwise, I think the museums are bigger and better 😊
